Alaska's Bear Hunting Judge
Judge George W. Folta killed over 200 Alaska bears in his career. Alaska Brown Bear feared him
while vicious criminals in his court room reviled him. He was a more recent “Teddy Roosevelt”
personality. Folta once killed three 10-foot Kodiak Brown Bears with a 1906 .35 Remington
autoloader while swashed with only a knapsack. He averaged four to six Alaska bears each year
until he died while bear hunting in Alaska in 1955.
